From the Laymen's Retreat League to the Century of the Laity

Drawing inspiration from the work that Jesuits and their lay colleagues had done in Belgium, France and Great Britain, in 1909, members of the Xavier Sodality formed the Laymen's Retreat League. The central goals of the League were three: to make the Spiritual Exercises available to laity (at the time, this largely meant to laymen), to expose the laity to the social teaching of the Church, and to prepare the American Church for what the founders believed would be the Century of the Laity. The presentation will provide both the historical background for the foundation of the League, and a brief overview of the spirituality that its leaders developed for Catholic lay leaders at the dawn of the 20th Century.
